Hazards Identification

Overall Statement of Hazardous Nature: According to criteria of MOEF (Ministry of Environment & Forest, India) and NOHSC ( National Occupational Health and Safety Commission , Australia) or elsewhere in many developed countries, UF Resin is not classified as Hazardous goods.  In its intact state, though the product is non hazarous in nature but, emission of and from portions of free formaldehyde from the product is hazardous to humane health on long term exposure.

Health Hazard Information: A very low Formaldehyde gas emission is there in the product.
However, in well ventilated storage areas or workplace, the concentration of formaldehyde is not likely to affect the general environment. Exposure to gas at work places may result in the following health effects:

- Eye irritation causing discomfort and redness.
- Skin irritation resulting in itching and occasional red rash.
- Nose, throat and lung irritation, especially in people with upper

Repeated exposure over many years to uncontrolled emission of gas increases the risk of nasal cavity   cancer. Inhalation of wood dust may also increase the risk of lung fibrosis (scarring). There are also increased risks of respiratory and skin sensitization from wood dust and formaldehyde resulting in asthma and dermatitis respectively. Formaldehyde has been evaluated by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) as group 1, carcinogenic to humans and by the European Union (EU) as a Category 3 carcinogen.

Explosion Hazard: None Scheduled
Dangerous goods class & Subsidiary Risks: None Allocated.

Material Safety Data Sheet

First Aid Measures

Swallowed: Rinse mouth with water. Give water to drink. If abdominal discomfort occurs seek medical attention.
Eyes :  Flush with flowing water for at least 15 minutes. If symptoms persists, seek medical attention.

Skin : Wash with mild soap and running water. Remove contaminated clothes. Do not rub or scratch skin, if becomes irritated. If irritation recurs, seek medical advice.

Inhalation : Remove victim from the area of exposure - avoid becoming a casualty. Remove contaminated clothing and loosen remain clothing. Allow patient to assume most comfortable position and keep warm. Rest until fully recovered. Consult a medical practioner, either at site or at
the nearest hospital.

First Aid Facilities : Provide eye wash facility.

Advice to Doctor : Treat symptomatically

Fire Fighting Measures

Specific Hazards: Non-combustible material, Decomposes on heating emitting toxic fumes,
Extinguishing media: Water, Carbon dioxide, Foam or dry chemical agents, fire extinguishers
Protective precautions for fire fighters: Fire fighters to wear breathing apparatus.
Hazchem code:  None allotted,

Accidental Release Measure

Emergency procedures: Slippery when spilt whilst in use in the format of liquid resin. Avoid accidents by cleaning up immediately. Wear protective equipment  to prevent skin and eye contact and breathing in vapors. Make the areas of spill well ventilated. Contain-prevent run off into drains
and waterways. Use soil, sand or other inert material. Wash the area with adequate water.

Methods & material for containment clean up: Not applicable, However, wear protective equipment.

Handling and Storage

Handling information : See personal protection,
Storage information  : The bags of UF Resin powder should be stored in well ventilated areas
away from sources of heat, flame or sparks and direct sunlight. Avoid smoking in storage or working areas.

Exposure controls / Personal Protection

Exposure Standards: India does not have any law on exposure standards. However, the safe values for the constituent Formaldehyde in other developed countries is as follows:
Formaldehyde            1.0 ppm (1.2 mg/m3) TWA
2.0 ppm (2.5 mg/m3) STEL (short
term exposure of 15 minutes)
Listed as a Sensitiser and
Category 2 carcinogen (probable
human carcinogen)Sen

Biological limit values:    Not applicable

TWA - The time-weighted average airborne concentration over an eight hour
working day, for a five-day working week over an entire working life.

STEL (Short Term Exposure Limit) - the average airborne concentration
over a 15 minute period which should not be exceeded at any time during a normal eight hour work day. According to current knowledge this concentration should neither impair the health of, nor cause undue discomfort to, nearly all workers.

Carcinogen Category 2 - probable human carcinogen. There is sufficient evidence to provide a strong presumption that human exposure may result in the development of cancer. This evidence is generally based on appropriate long term animal studies, limited epidemiological evidence or other relevant information. Sen' Notice-Sensitizer, The substance can cause a specific immune response in some people. An affected individual may subsequently react to exposure to minute levels of that substance. These Exposure Standards are guides to be used in the controls of occupational health hazards. All atmospheric contamination should be kept to as low a level as is workable. These exposure standards should not be used as fine dividing lines between safe and dangerous concentration of chemicals. They are not a measure of relative
toxicity.

Engineering controls: Local exhaust ventilation should be provided at areas of cutting to remove airborne emission. General dilution ventilation should be
provided as necessary to keep airborne emission below the applicable exposure limits and guidelines. The need for ventilation systems should be evaluated by a professional industrial hygienist, while the design of specific ventilation systems should be conducted by a professional engineer.

Personal protection

Skin protection: Wear loose, comfortable clothing. Long sleeved shirts and trousers are recommended to prevent skin irritation. Wash work clothes regularly and separately from other clothes.

Eye protection: Wear industrial safety glasses or non fogging goggles, if necessary.

Respiratory protection: Avoid breathing gaseous emission. Use suitable protective gear,

Toxicological Information

General: The IARC also evaluated formaldehyde in 1995 and concluded that:" There is limited evidence in humans for the carcinogenicity of formaldehyde; and that overall, formaldehyde is probably carcinogenic
to humans (group 2A)". The IARC again evaluated formaldehyde in June 2004 2 and concluded that:" There are adequate data available from humans for an increased risk of nasopharyngeal cancer" and that formaldehyde should now be classified as Group 1, carcinogenic to humans. Whilst UF Resin contains less then 0.2% free formaldehyde, people using the product as binder in Panel products may be exposed
to low concentration of formaldehyde if the boards are heated (as in laminating), are cut by laser cutting machines, and/or if dust particles come in contact with the moist mucous membranes lining the
However, no Adverse health effects expected if the product is handled in accordance with this Safety Data Sheet.

Symptoms or effects that may arise if the product is mishandled and overexposure occurs are:

Ingestion: No adverse effects expected, however large amounts may cause nausea and vomiting.
