FAQ:(1)Effects of Carbon and Sulfur Content on Steel Properties?
    Carbon is the main element next to iron, which directly affects the strength, plasticity, toughness and weldability of steel. When the carbon content in the steel is below 0.8%, the strength and hardness of the steel increase as the carbon content increases, while the ductility and toughness decrease; but when the carbon content is above 1.0%, as the carbon content increases increase, the strength of the steel decreases.
Sulfur comes from ore and fuel coke for steelmaking. It is a harmful element in steel. Sulfur exists in steel in the form of iron sulfide (FeS), and FeS and Fe form a low melting point (985°C) compound. the hot working temperature of steel is generally above 1150-1200 °C, so when the steel is hot worked, the workpiece is cracked due to the premature melting of the FeS compound, a phenomenon called "hot embrittlement". this in turn reduces the ductility and toughness of the steel, causing cracks during forging and rolling. In addition, sulfur also has a detrimental effect on weldability, it also reduces the corrosion resistance of the steel.
