The UV Lamp is truly UltraViolet -- a black light. Like any black light, it doesn't emit much visible light. However, it does emit alot of ultra violet light that you cannot directly see. What little light you do see directly is a very deep purple. UV works best with UV-reactive or phosphorescent surfaces. And, of course, with any day-glo surface as well.

Ultraviolet radiation is a kind of invisible light whose wavelength range is from 136nm to 400nm. It is divided into three wave bands: A, B, C and vacuum ultraviolet radiation.
A wave band: 320nm-400nm
B wave band: 275nm-320nm
C wave band: 200nm-275nm
Vacuum wave band: 100nm-200nm
